School leaders
Our Year Six students have had a great start to the
year. During camp and the ‘start up’ program it is
reinforced that all of our Year 6 students are leaders of
the school and role models to students in younger year
levels. The beginning of the year also brings with it an
opportunity for our senior students to take on additional
responsibilities and leadership positions across the
school. I congratulate the following students who have
been appointed leadership positions for 2023 and look
forward to working with these students and the entire
year 6 cohort in their final year.

Working with Children cards
Each year School Council approves a list of
volunteers working in the school. This will be
presented at a School Council meeting at the end of
this term. It is our school policy that any parents who
are participating in programs that have a high level of
contact with students require a Working With Children
Card. Examples of this include: Parents helping with
classrooms, camps, excursions, canteen roster or any
other activity involving direct contact with children. For
this reason we require all parent helpers to have a
Working With Children Card. It is free for volunteers
and is available through an online application process
at the website below.
Once you have filled in the online application form,
you need to go to a participating Australia Post retail
outlet to lodge your application.
www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/home
Our school will then be sent a copy of your Working
With Children Card for our records. These cards are
valid for 5 years.
COMMISSIONS THAT SUPPORT OUR SCHOOL
REBEL SPORTS MORNINGTON
By shopping at REBEL sport, Tyabb Primary School
receives a 5% commission on sales. We receive about
$1000 a year in commissions which go towards sports
equipment to run our PE program. Just mention Tyabb
Primary School when you make your purchase.
RITCHIES SOMERVILLE
Ritchies Community Benefit Program donates 0.5% of
the money you spend on groceries to our school. All
you need to do is scan your Community Benefit Card
in any Ritchies store in Victoria, NSW and Queensland
and we will receive this commission. If you do not
have a Community Benefit Card download the
Ritchies Card app, or register a card online, and
nominate our school.

Year 6 camp
Last week our grade 6s went to a five day camp called
Woorabinda in Yallourn North. This is a fantastic camp with lots
of great activities hiking, camping, high ropes, flying fox, raft
building, canoeing and hut building. Mrs Earl and Mrs Howden
went to visit last Tuesday and saw our grade sixes doing lots of
these activities they saw kids trying hard, giving everything a
go, working really well together, getting along and enjoying each
others company and showing respect and lovely manners. We
are super proud of our grade 6s well done!
Thank you to Mrs Monea and Mr Jonker for organising the camp
and to our parent helpers Brendan and Samantha for
volunteering your time to support our students. We couldn’t run
our camps without the support of our parents.

Welfare
Our focus values
The values of Tyabb Primary School are: Respect, Optimism, Safety, Integrity and Responsibility.
Each week classes focus on these values, with a particular focus on the nominated value for fortnightly awards.
Throughout the year, these values are discussed with the students so that they can become very familiar with
their definitions and why these values are important to Tyabb Primary School.
Respect is the focus for the entirety of term one.
What is Respect?
Respect is the glue that holds your relationships together. Learn ways to be respectful and know what to do
when somebody isn’t respectful toward you.
Why is Respect important?
Receiving respect from others is important because it
helps us to feel safe and to express ourselves.
Being respected by important people in our lives growing
up teaches us how to be respectful toward others.
Respect means that you accept somebody for who they
are, even when they’re different from you or you don’t
agree with them.
Respect in your relationships builds feelings of trust, safety, and wellbeing.
Respect doesn’t have to come naturally it is something you learn.
What does Respect look like?
Think about all the different situations in life where you have to get along with others how do you know if
there’s respect in your relationship?
Don’t forget to have respect for yourself also!
Being respectful toward others is one part of the puzzle. It’s also important to have respect for yourself.
Remember that you are valued and you matter. What you think and feel is just as important as what somebody
else thinks and feels.

Welfare
Caught being respectful ……
Over the next four weeks (commencing Monday 20th February), students and staff will be encouraged to
recognise respect in their school community. This will be done by ‘catching’ a peer or staff member being
respectful to another person.
Teachers will have slips in their classrooms available for students to use to acknowledge seeing respect
being given. Teachers will also be using these slips to recognise their students being respectful both in the
classroom and in the playground.
There will be a box in the office for students and staff to put their Caught Showing Respect slips. Each
week, 10 names will be drawn and announced over the loudspeaker. The winning students will receive a
canteen voucher (to the value of $5) to be spent by the end of term one. If you would prefer that your child
does not have a canteen voucher (if they are a winner) please contact Kris Grinsted via the office and we
can arrange an alternative prize.
Good luck on being caught showing respect.

The students were
Fantastic during their

Grade Six students had a good reason to sleep in this weekend just gonethey spent an
amazing 5 days at Camp Woorabinda last week! They enjoyed a wide range of acvies, such
as canoeing, building ras, construcng huts out of scks, zip lining, balancing on the high
ropes, vising the farm, camping in tents under the stars, bushwalking and even cooking their
own lunch over a re! Phew!
The students demonstrated the Camps values of Cooperaon, Consideraon and Courtesy at
all mes and were reported to be one of the best groups to the campever!
We would like to thank Sam and Brendan for coming along to camp with us and being amazing
support to the teaching sta, Mrs Monea and Mr Jonker. A fabulous me was had by all, and
Im sure the students made memories that will sck with them forever.
Ive got the Binda…. Ive got the Binda on my mind.

Chicken News
Many thanks to the Murphy/Palmer family
for taking such good care of our girls over
the holiday period. They came back well
rested and began laying straight away.
If you would like to be in the draw to win
a dozen eggs, just bring a $1 to Ms
Hewitts (formally known as Bartlett) Room
7 at the start of recess or lunch time.
We are after weekend carers of the chooks. Its super easy! The
girls just need to be let out in the morning and returned to their
hen house in the afternoon on both days of the weekend. The best
thing is, you get to keep the eggs. If this is something youd like
to do please contact Karina Hewitt using her old email

Specialist News
Everyone has had a fabulous start to the year in art. Well done to those students who
have already brought their named art smock ready for super messy stu! Lots of
amazing art work has already been displayed in the classrooms and Im looking
forward to geng a lot more on show in the oce and art room foyer.
The Preps have explored the art room and completed their rst task of self-portraits
aer looking carefully in mirrors, observing others and drawing what they see in
themselves. Copies of these drawings are on display outside the art room. They will
be looking at their families to draw next and will discuss perspecve and detail.
I hope the students have all enjoyed being back in the art room as much as I have
enjoyed welcoming them back.

PRIVACY COLLECTION STATEMENT – Primary Schools
Informaon for parents and carers
During the ordinary course of your childs aendance at our school, school sta will collect your childs
personal and health informaon when necessary to educate your child, or to support your childs social and
emoonal wellbeing or health in the school context. Such informaon will also be collected when required
to full a legal obligaon, including duty of care, an-discriminaon law and occupaonal health and safety
law. If that informaon is not collected, the school may be unable to provide opmal educaon or support
to your child, or full those legal obligaons.
For example, health informaon may be collected through the school nurse, primary welfare ocer or
wellbeing sta member. If your child is referred to a specic health service at school, such as a Student
Support Services ocer, the required consent will be obtained. Our school also collects informaon
provided by parents and carers through the School Entrance Health Quesonnaire (SEHQ) and the Early
Childhood Intervenon Service (ECIS) Transion Form.
Our school may use online tools, such as apps and other soware, to eecvely collect and manage
informaon about your child for teaching and learning purposes, parent communicaon and engagement;
student administraon; and school management purposes. When our school uses these online tools, we
take steps to ensure that your childs informaon is secure. If you have any concerns about the use of these
online tools, please contact us.
School sta will only share your childs personal or health informaon with other sta who need to know to
enable the school to educate or support your child, or full a legal obligaon.
When our students transfer to another Victorian government school, personal and health informaon about
that student will be transferred to that next school. Transferring this informaon is in the best interests of
our students and assists that next school to provide opmal educaon and support to students.
In some limited circumstances, informaon may be disclosed outside of the school (and outside of the
Department of Educaon and Training). The school will seek your consent for such disclosures unless the
disclosure is allowed or mandated by law.
Our school values the privacy of every person. When collecng and managing personal and health
informaon, all school sta must comply with Victorian privacy law. For more informaon about privacy
including about how to access personal and health informaon held by the school about you or your child,
