Chapter 1: Installing and Licensing
TheTerminalEmulation(TE)Clientisanapplicationinstalledonamobiledeviceortabletthat
connectstoIBM5250/3270,VT100/220,andXTERMhosts.TheClientusestheTelnetorSSH
protocolstoconnecttotheremotehostandemulatestheterminal.
TheTEClientuseshostprofilestoconfigurethehostinformation.Emulationparameters
definehowtheClientactsduringtheemulationsession,suchasthebeepvolumeorwhatto
doifthescanneddataislargerthantheentryfield.TheTEClientforAndroiddoesnothave
thesameoptionsasTEClientsforWindowsoperatingsystems.
TheTEClientforAndroidhasbeenoptimizedforanAndroidOS,andincludesthecapability
toconfiguretheClientfromthedevice.Clientmenusandkeyboardshavebeentailoredfor
Android.TheClientscreenzooms,pans,andreorientsbasedondeviceorientation.This
manualintroducestheoptionsandtasksavailablewithaTEClientforAndroid.
TheTEClientislicensedeithermanuallyforeachdevice,orbyusingaWavelinklicense
server.ContactWavelinkCustomerSupporttoobtainlicenses.
TheClientcanalsobeconfiguredtoconnecttoahostthroughaWavelinkConnectProproxy
server.ConnectProisanoptionalcomponentofTerminalEmulationthathandlessession
persistence.ConnectProactsasaproxybetweenthemobiledeviceandtheemulationhost.If
thedevicelosesconnectivityorgoestosleep,theConnectProservermaintainsthesession
untilthedevicereconnects.ConnectProisfreewithTerminalEmulationbutisinstalled

Installing the TEClient on Android
InordertoinstalltheTEClientforAndroidonadevice,thedevicemustbeconfiguredto
allowinstallationofnon-Marketapplications.UsetheQRcodebelowortheURLtodownload
andinstalltheapp.TheTEClientforAndroidisconfiguredfromthemobiledeviceafteritis
installed.
NOTE:IfyouhaveapreviousversionoftheTEClientinstalled,youmustuninstallbefore
installingthenewversion.

To install the TE Client for Android:
1Configurethedevicetoallowinstallationofnon-Marketapplications.(Thisoptionis
oftenunderSettings > Applications.)
2Usingthedevice,scantheQRcodeoropenabrowserandnavigateWavelinkdownloads
page.TheTEClientsforAndroidarelistedundertheUniversalClients.Downloadthe
latestClient.

ThedevicedownloadstheClient.
3ViewthedeviceNotificationsbypullingdownthestatusbar.Thedownloadstatusofthe
Clientfileisdisplayed.WhentheClientdownloadiscomplete,tapthenotificationto
installtheClient.
4Theinstallationscreenappears.TapInstall.
5Theappisinstalled.TapOpentolaunchtheTEClient,ortapDone.
Licensing the TEClient
TheTEClientrequiresalicenseforfullfunctionality.Emulationlicensesmaybespecifictoan
emulationtype(forexample,alicensecanbeissuedforVTemulationorIBMemulation).
TherearetwotypesofTEClientlicenses:platformlicensesandmaintenancelicenses.
•Platform licenses.Aplatform(orbase)licenseauthorizesyoutouseaversionofthe
TEClientandanybuildsassociatedwiththatversion.Forexample,ifyoupurchaseda1.0
TEClientlicense,thenyouareentitledtouse1.00-xxbuilds.Ifyouwanttoupgrade
beyondaversion1.0TEClient,thenyoumusteitherbuyanewplatformlicenseor
purchaseamaintenancelicense.Platformlicensesdonotexpire,buttheydonotallowyou
toupgradetoanewerversionoftheTEClient.
•Maintenance licenses.AmaintenancelicenseallowsyoutoupgradeyourTEClient
whennewmajorversionsoftheTEClientbecomeavailable.Forexample,amaintenance
licensewouldallowyoutoupgradefromTEClient1.xtoTEClient2.x.Youmusthavea
baselicenseforeachmaintenancelicenseinuse.

Maintenancelicensesarevalidonlythroughaspecificdate.Aftertheexpirationdate,if
youupgradetheTEClient,itwillreverttooperatingindemomode.
YoucanusetheClientwithoutalicense,butyouwillbelimitedtothedemomodewithout
fullfunctionality.Whenyouattempttoinitiateaterminalemulationsession,theTEClientwill
beginbroadcastinginanattempttolocatealicenseserver.Atthatpoint,youarepromptedto
eitherenteralicenseortoinitiatethesessionindemomode.Whileindemomode,youmay
initiateterminalemulationsessionswithhosts.However,eachterminalemulationsessionthat
youinitiatewillautomaticallydisconnectafteronehour.
TherearetwowaystolicensetheTEClient:
•Manual licensing.UsetheTEClientinterfaceonthemobiledevicetomanuallyinput
licensinginformation.
•License Server.UseaLicenseServertoautomaticallyprovideTEClientlicensestothe
mobiledevicesonyournetwork.
NOTE:ToobtainTerminalEmulationlicenses,pleasecontactWavelinkcustomerservice.

Manually Licensing the TEClient
YoumaykeyinyourauthorizationinformationmanuallythroughtheTEClientinterfaceon
themobiledevice.Whenyoumanuallyassignlicenses,eachdeviceisassociatedwithaunique
UserNumber.Forexample,tolicense50devices,Wavelinkwouldissuealicensewithauser
limitof50.Eachofthe50deviceswouldhaveadifferentUserNumber,from1to50.
Whenyoumanuallyconfigurethelicensinginformation,youmusthavethefollowing
information:
Platform Theemulationtype.
Licensee Name ThenameofthepersonorcompanyforwhichtheClientislicensed.
Serial Number Theserialnumberforthelicense.
Expiration Date TheexpirationdateofthelicenseintheformatofMMDDYYYY.
Authorization Code Theauthorizationcodeforthelicense.

User Number Anumberuniquetothedevice.Itcanbeanynumberbetween1and
themaximumnumberofusersforwhichthelicenseprovides.
User Limit Themaximumnumberofusersforthelicense.
To manually license a TEClient:
1Onthedevice,launchtheTEClient.
2AddalicensebytappingMenu > More > Authorization.
3TapAdd New License.
4Providethelicenseinformationinthetextboxes.
5TapAdd License.
Using the License Server to License the TEClient
TheclientlicenseserverisaWavelinkapplicationthatisresponsibleforsupplyinglicensesto
mobiledevicesthatareusingtheTEClient.
NOTE:TheclientlicenseservershouldnotbeconfusedwiththeAvalanchelicenseserver.
TheyareseparateWavelinkapplications.
Forinformationaboutinstallingandconfiguringtheclientlicenseserver,seetheTerminal
Emulation License Server Reference GuideontheWavelinkWebsite.
Whenyouusethedevicetoattempttoinitiateanemulationsessionwithahost,anunlicensed
Clientautomaticallyattemptstoobtainalicensefromalicenseserver.
To use the license server to obtain a license:
1WhenyouattempttoconnecttoahostusingtheTEClient,itbroadcastsarequestfora
licenseonthelocalIPnetwork.Or,ifyouhaveconfiguredthelicenseserveraddress,the
Clientsendsarequesttothespecifiedlicenseserver.
2Licenseserverswithanavailablelicenserespondbyofferingalicense.
3TheTEClientacceptsthefirstlicensethatitreceivesandsendsareplytothelicense
server.
Uninstalling the TEClient
UninstalltheTEClientforAndroidfromthedevice'sSettingsmenu.
To uninstall the TE Client for Android:
1Onthedevice,navigatetoSettings > Applications > Manage Applications.

OncetheTEClienthasbeeninstalled,theTerminalEmulationappwillappearinthelistof
installedapps.TolaunchtheClient,taptheTerminalEmulationicon.TheTEClientworks
witheitherapairedBluetoothscanneroracamerainthedevice.Whenyouscandata,it
appearsinthecurrentlyselectedfield.
•ToexittheClient,tapMenu > Exit.
•Toconnecttoahost,tapthemainscreenortapMenu > Connect.Youwillbeableto
selectthehostprofilefromthelistthatappears.
•Todisconnectanemulationsession,tapMenu > Disconnect.
•Tousethecamerascanner,tapMenu > Scan.Whenyouhavescannedthebarcode,the
camerainterfaceclosesandtheemulationscreenreappears.

YoucanconfiguretheTEClienteitherthroughWavelinkAvalancheorthroughtheinstalled
Clientonthedevice.YoudonotneedtohaveAvalanchelicensesinordertouseAvalancheto
configuretheTEClient.

Configuring the TEClient using Avalanche
UseanAvalanchepayloadtoconfigureSSLcertificates,hostprofiles,oremulationparameters
foranAndroiddevice.Youcanconfiguremultiplehostprofilepayloadsforeachdevice,but
onlyoneemulationparameterspayload.
ToconfiguretheTEClientusingAvalanche,youdonotneedtohaveAvalanchelicenses.
To configure the TEClient when the device has an Avalanche license:
1LogintotheAvalancheConsole.
2Navigatetothefolderwhereyouwantthepayloadcreated.
3FromtheProfilestab,clickAdd PayloadintheAvailablePayloadspanel.
4ThePayloaddialogboxappears.SelecttheAlloption,andthenthetypeofpayloadyou
wanttocreate.
5ConfiguretheoptionsasdesiredandclickSave.
6FromtheProfilestab,clickAdd ProfileintheAvailableProfilespanel.
7TheNew Profiledialogboxappears.ClickApplication Configuration.
8Createanamefortheprofile,thenselectthepayloadorpayloadsyouwanttoassociate
withtheprofile.Saveyourchanges.
9SelectthecheckboxnexttothenameoftheprofileandclickApplyintheAvailable
Profilespanel.
10Deployyourchanges.
Thenexttimethedevicechecksin,thepayloadisdownloaded.WhentheTEClientis
launched,thenewsettingsareappliedandthehostprofilesareavailable.

To configure theTEclient when the device does not have an Avalanche license:
1LogintotheAvalancheConsole.
2Navigatetothefolderwhereyouwantthepayloadcreated.
NOTE:IntheAvalanchenavigationtree,thereisaDefaultdevicefolder.Ifallofyour
devicesareusingthesameconfiguration,youmaywanttousetheDefaultfolder.However,
ifyouhavedevicesusingdifferentconfigurations,createaseparatefolderforeach
configuration.
3FromtheProfilestab,clickAdd PayloadintheAvailablePayloadspanel.
4ThePayloaddialogboxappears.SelecttheAlloption,andthenthetypeofpayloadyou
wanttocreate.
5ConfiguretheoptionsasdesiredandclickSave.
6FromtheProfilestab,clickAdd ProfileintheAvailableProfilespanel.
7TheNew Profiledialogboxappears.ClickApplication Configuration.
8Createanamefortheprofile,thenselectthepayloadorpayloadsyouwanttoassociate
withtheprofile.Saveyourchanges.
9SelectthecheckboxnexttothenameoftheprofileandclickApplyintheAvailable
Profilespanel.
10Deployyourchanges.
11IntheNavigationTree,clicktheViewbuttontoviewthefolderdetails.
12OntheFolderDetailspage,clickPrint QR Code.
13TheQRcodeforthepayloadsappliedtothefolderappearsinthebrowser.
14Onthedevice,launchtheTEClient.
15IftheTEClientpromptsyoutoscantheQRcode,clickOKandscantheQRcode.
Otherwise,presstheMenubutton.Whenthemainmenuappears,tapMore > Server
Configuration > Scan Server AddressandthenscantheQRcode.
ThedeviceconnectstotheAvalancheserverandpullstheconfigurationinformation
associatedwiththefolder.
Configuring Host Profiles
AhostprofiledefinesthesettingsthattheTEClientshouldusewhenitattemptstoinitiatea
connectionwithaspecifichost.Thehostprofilemayincludetheemulationtype,IPaddressof

thehost,IPaddressoftheTermProxy/ConnectProserver,orothersettings.Youmay
configureanunlimitednumberofhostprofiles.
Whenadeviceuserattemptstoinitiateasessionwithahost,theTEClientdisplaysalistof
availablehostprofiles.Theuserselectsthehosthewantstoconnectto,andtheTEClientuses
thehostprofilesettingstoconnecttothehost.
Dependingontheemulationtype,therearedifferentoptionsavailablewhenconfiguringa
hostprofile.Thefollowingoptionsmaybeavailablewhenyouconfigureahostprofile:

UseSSL/TLS
encryption
UsesSSL/TLStoencrypttheinformationsenttothehost.Thereisno
additionalsoftwareforSSL/TLSontheAndroiddevice,butthehostmustbe
configuredforSSL/TLS.
WhenyouenableSSL/TLSencryption,youmustuseacertificate.Tapthe
Manage Certificatesbutton,thentapInsert Certificate.Tapthenameof
thecertificateinthelistandthenAccept Certificate.
NOTE:Thecertificatemustbesavedas certificates.pem on
thedeviceintherootdirectoryofthefirstlistedmountedstorage
(notpartoftherootfilesystem).Thismaybeinternalstorageoran
SDcard.
UseSSH

Configuring Emulation Parameters
EmulationparametersdefinehowtheTEClientbehaveswhileitisconnectedtoahost.This
includessoundsandspecialkeyfunctions,aswellasthepasswordsforconfiguringtheClient.
Dependingontheemulationtype,therearedifferentoptionsavailablewhenconfiguring
emulationparameters.Thefollowingoptionsmaybeavailable:
